Tundish and
Ladle Cover

The Tundish is a critical link in the steel making chain of quality, the system for the successful production of high quality steel can be viewed as a Chain of Quality consisting of a number of metallurgical reactors linked together by a series of Transfer operations.

They are:
• Ladle metallurgy
• Tundish Metallurgy
• Mould metallurgy

Development in both Ladle and mould metallurgy have advanced at a rapid pace and have outstripped the tundish fluxes. Rice husk ash and Rice husk noodles is to date the most used material, whilst there is advantages i.e. good thermal insulation, low cost, there are disadvantages, and five major problems are mentioned:
• Silicon transfer to the metal. 2SiO2 + 4Al = 2Al2O3 + 3Si
• High melting point, little liquid slag therefore less protection from oxidation.
• Thermal conversion of SiO2 – crystalline christobalite which is a health hazard.
• Poor Al2O3 absorption.
• Poor flow ability.

Development of Hi Carb insulating Pellets:

Hi Carb Solutions has developed a unique concept in Tundish steel insulation.

Two products have been developed; the first is basic high magnesia content in pelletised form of cylindrical shape 4 mms Dia by 4 to 5 mms long.

The second also pelletised but is acidic insofar as comprising mainly of amorphous silica.

Both basic and acidic pellets are produced with tiny air pockets through the pellets. They do not revert to powder form at elevated temperatures thus eliminating pollution arising from fine particles.

Advantages of
basic Pellets:

• Absorption of non-metallic inclusion, oxide inclusions such as deoxidation products (solid alumina and liquid aluminates) and slag carry over from the ladle.
• Do not attack refractory tundish linings and shrouds.
• Used on a wide range of steels, low carbon, SBQ, stainless steel and plate grade.
• Low Silicon pick up.

Advantages of
Acidic Pellets:

• Due to its amorphous content and non-conductive behaviour there is virtually no drop of temperature at the time of application.
• Excellent insulative properties.
• Low Silicon pick up.
• No pollution during charging.
